I kind of like this covered in paper. Very colorful and a start to your painting kits. I almost said mania but that may not have sounded positive, maybe craze? But both said with love and enjoyment!

The building part was hard to get them all together at the top and bottom. Yikes! It was crazy and I broke several pieces several times…but thanks for the compliment on the colors. That piece of foil is hiding another OOPS…LOL! @jeanneL

I love the bright rainbow colors! I have no idea what colors I want to do. Maybe I’ll ask AI to help come up with some ideas.
I recently tried staining for the first time when I did the “Record Mood” set. The instructions told me to make the stain from brown paint. I didn’t think it would work but it turned out perfect. I would say the same thing as you. Only need one coat but the wood absorbs moisture.
Honestly I think I would rather deal with stains than paint when it comes to wood puzzles. Paint can cause warping and swelling too.

You did a wonderfull job on this. I like the flame with the different colors 
I use acrylic paint, it doesn’t make the wood swell and it covers well (don’t buy the cheapest versions, they cover much less well).

Thank yuu! I use Jo Sonja acrylics, but they still need 2 coats, sometimes 3 and the edges always need extra, it takes much longer to paint compared to using the wood stain. I will use the stains whenever I can instead now.

Some acrylic paints don’t cover well, and you do need to apply multiple coats. I find that with stain, the wood grain is sometimes still too visible. 
But your hot air balloon looks fantastic, and the colors are very vibrant

Yes it depends what look you want to go for too. I love the wood grain showing through myself but it’s definitely not for every project or person!

You’re right. I used cheap acrylic paint on some of the structures to make the wood grain more visible.
