I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite tools for building miniatures!
When I first started building Robotime/Rolife kits, I quickly learned that having the right tools nearby makes the whole process feel so much easier, cleaner, and less stressful. You definitely do not need a huge craft setup to get started, but a few helpful tools can make a big difference — especially when working with tiny pieces, delicate details, and parts that need time to dry.
Here are some of my favorite tools to keep at my craft desk:
A good glue is a must for miniature building. I like having a few different types nearby depending on what I’m working on — wood pieces, paper details, plastic pieces, or tiny decorations.
This is so helpful for paper pieces, wallpaper, signs, posters, and little flat details. It keeps things neat without needing too much glue.
I love saving any extra foam tape that comes in previous kits because it always comes in handy later! It’s perfect when you want to add a little lift, dimension, or support to tiny pieces.
You can never have too many tweezers. Straight tweezers, curved tweezers, fine-tip tweezers — they all help so much when placing tiny flowers, books, stickers, wires, and delicate decorations.
Scissors
Perfect for trimming paper, cutting tape, shaping pieces, and fixing little edges.
Pliers
Pliers are super helpful for bending wire, holding small pieces, or adjusting tiny parts that are hard to grab by hand.
This is one of those tools that makes trimming and cutting so much cleaner. I also like keeping extra blades nearby because a sharp blade makes a huge difference. Always be careful with this one and use a cutting mat underneath!
A cutting mat protects your desk and gives you a better surface for trimming, measuring, and cutting small pieces.
These are one of my favorite little helpers! They hold pieces in place while glue is drying, especially walls, shelves, furniture, and anything that needs a little extra support.
Good lighting makes such a big difference when building miniatures. A ring light or bright desk lamp helps you see tiny details more clearly and makes filming or taking progress photos easier too.
Craft tubs are so helpful for keeping extra supplies organized, especially leftover kit pieces, glue, tape, foam tape, extra flowers, wires, and tiny accessories. I love having a dedicated tub for the “extras” because you never know when a leftover piece from one build will be perfect for another one!
I love keeping acrylic markers nearby for customizing pieces, touching up edges, adding little details, or changing colors to match my style.
I also love collecting tiny accessories that can be added to different builds — little picture frames, books, plants, signs, dishes, flowers, and other tiny decor pieces. They are such a fun way to customize a kit and make it feel even more personal. I just ordered a ton of miniature accessories, and I cannot wait for them to come in!
Small paint brushes
Great for paint touch-ups, glue application, dusting, or adding custom details.
Extra batteries
Especially useful for light-up builds so you can test the glow right away. You can never have too many batteries ![]()
A few other helpful things I like to keep nearby:
Toothpicks for tiny glue dots
A ruler for lining pieces up evenly
Sandpaper or a nail file for smoothing edges
Small trays or bags for organizing tiny pieces
Wipes or paper towels for glue messes
A mini screwdriver for battery boxes
Wax pencil or pickup tool for tiny beads and accessories
Masking tape or painter’s tape for temporary placement
Zip bags and labels for leftover pieces
A small trash bowl for scraps
Patience — honestly the most important tool ![]()
You do not need everything at once, but having a few of these nearby can make building feel so much easier and more organized!
Miniature building is all about taking your time and enjoying the process. The right tools just make it feel a little more cozy, organized, and fun.
