Last month I shared a post about receiving Elsa’s Tailoring, which I was planning to turn into a gift for my grandmother and adapt it to her (Here). Since today I’ve just started the new school year, work is going to keep me quite busy (send help ) , so it’ll probably take me some time to finish it.
Still, I wanted to show you a bit of what I have in mind:
I’ll be modifying the kit’s photos and replacing them with photos of her—that was clear to me from the beginning. (Can you believe she’s been sewing her whole life and no one has a single photo of her sewing?! ) That’s why I’m going to focus on adding photos of her and my grandfather, who passed away 32 years ago and whom she always talks about.
I’m also exploring how to paint the furniture to give it a more vintage/antique look, so I’ve been watching quite a few videos for inspiration. Something like that, maybe. (If you have any good tips for this, I’d really appreciate them!)
Another idea is to make an extra dress for the mannequin based on one she made herself. I might need help from my partner for this one, since he’s the one who knows how to use the sewing machine (so this might just stay a crazy idea unless he jumps in to help ).
For floors and walls I’m still undecided, though I may keep the wall as is because I find it absolutely adorable.
Finally, I’d like to add some pieces of things my grandmother has sewn herself. For example, a piece of a pink blanket she gave me to unravel and reuse the yarn (which I never did and never will!). I’ve kept it ever since, unfinished, and it could even work as a poncho . It’s the one in the first photo hehe.
Those all sound amazing! My mother is a seamstress. She only quit working 4 years ago at age 79. For the look you are trying to get on the furniture, you should paint your darker color first, then your lighter color, then sand off top color around edges and in sporadic areas.
Your story is so touching. Your grandma will surely cry tears of joy. Especially seeing you incorporate photos of your grandma and grandpa into the gift. As a girl, I find it very heartwarming. You also asked if there were any other suggestions. I think your grandma’s knitted scarf is a great idea. You could put a rug under the table. You could also replace the white tablecloth on the right. What do you think? It’s important to blend the memories of you and your grandma.
What a heartwarming and thoughtful project! Turning the kit into a personal treasure for your grandma is just beautiful.
Love the idea of adding photos of her and your grandpa—such a meaningful way to honor her memories and stories. The vintage furniture makeover and incorporating pieces she made herself (like that pink blanket!) will make it even more special.
Can’t wait to see how it turns out! Wishing you the best with your busy school schedule—it’ll be worth it. Grandma will absolutely love this gift!
Looking forward to your updates!
I absolutely love your idea of adding photos and little pieces of her own sewing work — it’s such a meaningful way to preserve her memories and make the kit even more personal. The vintage-style furniture and the extra dress for the mannequin sound amazing too!
The idea is great and has impressed us. If everything goes as planned, I believe my grandmother will be very happy and will often look at the tailor shop and recall the good old days. Come on, I look forward to your feedback on the follow-up results in this post.
Wow, so sweet. You’re putting so much love into this gift for your grandmother, and I’m sure she’ll be deeply touched by it.
I really love your DIY plans — adding photos of her and your grandfather, repainting the furniture for a vintage look, and even including pieces from the pink blanket. It’s like you’re weaving her memories into the little house, which makes it so special and one of a kind.
I can’t wait to see how your project turns out — it already sounds amazing, and I’m excited to follow along as your story continues!
This custom miniature tailor shop for your grandmother is incredibly thoughtful! You’ve filled the gift with her craft and memories—it’s truly touching. I’m sure she’ll love it. Can’t wait to see your next updates!

The idea of replacing the photos with pictures of her and your grandfather is absolutely beautiful – it’s going to transform the kit into a true family heirloom.
Wow!it’s not just a DIY project, it’s a piece of family story I’m sure your grandma will be deeply moved when she sees it.

This is such a heartfelt and beautiful project! Your grandmother is going to absolutely treasure it—especially with all the personal touches you’re adding. The idea to include photos of her and your grandfather is so meaningful, and painting the furniture vintage-style will really make it feel like a piece of her story.
What a sweet idea! I think your grandmother find it a wonderful gift, especially with the personal touch you’re giving it. I’m really curious to see how it turns out and would love it if you shared your progress with us. I think @Nita_Davis already gave a good tip for painting the furniture.
Ohhh, I’m sure your mom would love this kit, @Nita_Davis!!
And thank you so much for the tip!!! I’ll definitely keep it in mind when I start working on the furniture
Thank you so much! Right now I’m so eager to get started and bring all my ideas to life, but these first days are just too chaotic. Hopefully I can find a moment this week to start it
Thank you @jucy. Honestly, this kit is so beautiful that I really wouldn’t change a single thing. So just adapting it a little to her, I think that will be enough
