A little while ago, I shared one of my favorite tips about using brush-on nail glue for miniatures. Today, I wanted to share another tiny habit that has saved me from making a lot of mistakes over the years.
Before I add even the smallest drop of glue, I always pause for 5 seconds and ask myself:
Is this piece facing the right direction?
Am I using the correct part?
Does it fit properly without forcing it?
Did I read the next instruction?
That quick little pause has saved me from upside-down pieces, broken parts, and those “Oh no…” moments that every builder knows too well.
The best part? It only takes a few seconds, but it can save you a lot of time, frustration, and repairs later.

Sometimes I I’ll actually use Tack-It to temporarily hold pieces in place before I commit to gluing them. That way I can step back, look at everything, and make sure I’m happy with the placement first.
@MamaNheza haha you nailed it. But for me beamcause of my left handedness I have to double check all parts I put on to make sure it is reflected the way it’s supposed to be! Assembling parts and gluing! I have made so many mistakes by just going with my personal orientation only to find out it’s placed backwards or upside down or not right lol.

I never even thought about how being left-handed could make that even trickier! That definitely gives a whole new meaning to the 5-second rule. It sounds like you’ve learned to trust the instructions more than your instincts. I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s accidentally glued something on backwards before realizing it!
@MamaNheza this 5-second glue check is a genuinely useful habit. Pausing to confirm orientation, fit, the correct part, and the next instruction can save so many “oh no” moments. It’s a small tip, but it can make a build feel much calmer.
@Tinybysiw Tack-It as a temporary hold is such a smart companion to the 5-second rule. Being able to step back before committing glue can save a lot of rework, especially on pieces where alignment changes the whole look.
Hahaha, we’ve all been there! Sometimes I convince myself, “It’ll be fine!”… and then five minutes later I’m wishing I’d taken those extra few seconds to check first. That’s exactly how the 5-second rule was born for me!
That’s one of the nice things about many newer kits! They fit together so well that glue isn’t always necessary. I still keep mine nearby just in case a tiny piece needs a little extra help, but it’s great when the design holds everything securely on its own.
