.I know I have mentioned how much I like to paint edges and pieces in my builds. I love it in fact! But I realized that just painting the edges isn’t enough to complete the look. Sometimes there are tiny nooks and crannies that need painted as well. You might think that no one would notice if you skipped it, but you might be surprised what a difference it makes.
Take these city building for example. I painted the edges of the buildings to match the color on the front of the pieces.
But then I decided that if I wanted to complete the look. I needed to paint the inside edges of the tiny windows. You might think it’s not big deal, but you’d be surprised. It really gives the pieces dimension and color.
This is a picture showing some of the windows starting to be painted. The unpainted ones show the brown wood. And of course the windows need to match the front of the buildings…
Always paint from the back side of the piece so that paint doesn’t get on the front of the piece.
I only use Acrylic paint markers with the brush tip so that they can reach into tiny places.
I hope this helps someone. Yes, it takes a lot of extra time…but the attention to detail makes all the difference. And when it’s completed you can sit back and admire it…with the biggest smile on your face!
It never fails, I get up and glue the acetate window and realize I forgot the inside edges and I agree it makes a difference. If I am careful I can still do it and if needed, I use a paint brush with a little water and clean up the paint which got on acetate!
Detail goals! It’s so satisfying to see those windows finally match the facade. It definitely takes a lot of patience, but that fulfillment feeling at the end makes every stroke worth it. I also love using acrylic markers as it makes painting less messy and they’re so easy to set aside after. No troublesome clean up needed. They really are a builder’s best friend!
Painting those tiny nooks and crannies truly elevates the entire look of your city buildings. It is amazing how such small details like the inside edges of windows can make a big difference. Your dedication to matching the colors and adding that extra touch is inspiring for every miniaturist. Keep sharing these fantastic tips, they really help bring our builds to life.
That looks absolutely fantastic. I do love painting edges but I have to admit that the kit I’m doing right now, I just don’t feel like it. All raw edges on this one
Those of us that paint are slowly weaving our webs to draw you in and attempt some too!! I started out small and each kit I may do more or less. But I have been inspired!
