Mini class: Painting small details

I’m often asked how I paint small details so neatly. Here I explain step by step how I work.

  1. I take my paint tray and thoroughly wet the sponge.

  2. I start with the large surfaces. I slightly dampen my brush with the sponge so the paint spreads better and there are fewer streaks. I always paint in one direction and try to blend the thicker paint strokes as much as possible. I use a flat brush so I can paint neatly along the edges.

  3. I apply another coat if the first one isn’t opaque enough. As you can see in the video, I re-moisten my brush each time I pick up paint while applying the second coat. This softens the paint slightly and allows me to achieve the smoothest finish.

  4. Now I’m starting with the small lines between the details. I’m painting them with a very thin brush. I’m still always painting in one direction. Make sure there’s enough paint on the brush and moisten it regularly to keep the paint soft. If I make a mistake, I’ll leave it as is for now; I’ll touch it up later.

  5. Now everything is painted, and the edges can be touched up. Any spots where I went a bit too far, I’ll touch up with a precision knife. I’ll very carefully and gently scratch away the paint. This will make the edges smooth.

  6. Now that the front is completely painted, it’s time to paint the edges. I’m using markers for this.

Tip; the gold marker didn’t work very well anymore. This might be because the tip has dried out a bit. Remove the tip from the marker and place it in a bowl of hot tap water (Don’t forget to cover the marker with the cap). After soaking for 5 minutes, you can rinse it under warm water. I always squeeze the tip a bit to make it completely flexible. Dry the tip in a paper towel and place it back in the marker. Shake it well a few times, and the tip will refill with paint. The marker is working properly again.
