After building more than 150 miniature kits, I’ve picked up a few habits that aren’t always part of the official instructions. One of the biggest is testing the lights as step number one.
There are very few miniature-building moments more disappointing than realizing a light isn’t working after the walls, roof, furniture, and decorations are already glued into place.
Over time, I’ve added my own testing checkpoints. Whenever I connect a major section of wiring, I do a quick power test. If a kit has multiple lights, I test them individually, and I always test again before closing up an area that would be difficult to reach later.
For me, it isn’t about expecting problems. It’s about peace of mind. I’d rather find a loose, pinched, or disconnected wire while it’s still easy to fix.
This is especially important when I’m twisting wires together instead of soldering because it’s easy for a connection to work loose during assembly without noticing.
Have you developed any building habits that aren’t in the instructions but have become part of your routine?

@Kim_Kieffer excellent point. I test them before I start on anything!! And continually through the process. I’ve been burned too many time to not test them !
Excellent advice. I have taken to testing my lights before starting the build as well. It’s very disappointing to complete a build and have faulty wiring.
Me too! I want to learn soldering soon so i change any batteries powered kits into a type C because it more reliable plugging into power socket or powrbank than having to purchase batteries everytime.
