I just got started building the Starry Dome Cathedral, and I have mixed feelings about it.
First off I got really excited to try one kit out of the 3 in the Rose Window cathedral series. What had me a bit disappointed was the quality of the wood. The wood feels flimsy and breaks easily. I have a feeling that I’m going to break a few parts, but I’m also seeing that there are a few replacement parts on the boards so that will be very helpful.
The parts are pretty flimsy. I didn’t wind up breaking any of them, but kept the spare parts in case something happens or if my mom who I gave it to decides to knock it over or something lol. Good luck!
I agree that the parts are thin but I think they add to the beauty of the final build. I think that I only broke one piece that didn’t have a replacement part but I glued it well and it wasn’t noticeable in the final build.
I did find that many of my pieces kept falling out as I built but I held off gluing until getting toward the end.
I made a mistake lining up the pieces that the wiring goes through so make sure that you keep an eye on that or you may have to pull it apart to fix it.
Overall, I love be this build. It’s elegant and beautiful.
I agree that this one is the prettiest. I may have to think about the other two, but in the meantime I’ll see how this building process is going to be like.
this is quite disappointing because considering the design I thought the wood would be denser than usual!! but oh well I hope it’s beauty would compensate for that!!
Hi @mchipman, thank you for sharing your honest first impressions of the Starry Dome Cathedral. The concept is beautiful, and your notes about the thin wood and spare parts are really helpful for other builders starting this series.
That’s a very honest take on the Starry Dome Cathedral . I can imagine the excitement of diving into one of the kits from the Rose Window series, only to feel a bit let down by the wood quality.
