My husband use to be quite the hands on man. He’s older than I am. His memory is not as it was and his health is going downhill.
BUT he never stops . He wanted to do a mechanical build. A marble run actually. I bought him the music box to start out with.
He’s never been one for following directions and skips around so that began the problems.
After a week of scattered pieces I suggested we work together.
I had to do some repairs to broken pieces and change some misplaced items but we finished it. It’s rather slow and the one gear only catches when it feels like it but it’s a lovely representation of an Orrery.
I may take it apart some day and try to redo it. The gears are waxed and measured with the tool to precision but I fear some of the repaired broken bits are hindering smoothness.
I’m pleased that he allowed you to help him with this. It looks great and although it is skipping a gear it still works okay.
It looks great on the shelf next to your owl.
I honestly find it cute and romantic how you helped him assemble this kit with broken parts beyong repair now it’ll be a memory of the time you spent together trying to save it
Hi @kialo, this story is so touching, even with the tricky gear and repaired pieces. The time you and your husband spent finishing it together makes the music box feel full of meaning, and I hope a future tune up brings it even closer to smooth.
OMG I totally get this. My husband is the same. Built a big wheel, no directions, and botched it. I ended up building it. I am now the designated builder for all toys etc.
This is so cute may this love find me forever (i think it already has, time will tell )
I love that you guys are working together on a kit, I love that for you guys. I know you will figure it out and it’s going to be an amazing build! All the best
