Thank you so much. I’ve always felt that you’re a very warm and kind person too, Wendy. Thank you for everything you do for the community and for the kids ![]()
Thank you, Tina. It’s a lovely coincidence that my mother’s English name is also Tina. She works in science education within the local government in my hometown.
Even though we haven’t met in person, I can feel the same kind of warmth and kindness in you that reminds me of her.
These two fabrics and styles have a very distinct Nanyang character. More precisely, they reflect a Chinese Nanyang style.
In the early twentieth century, the Nanyang region was influenced by China both culturally and through trade, while at the same time being shaped by Western colonial rule. This unique overlap gave rise to a local style unlike anywhere else, with Malaysia and Singapore being especially representative.
During that period, due to war and instability in mainland China, many Chinese migrants from Guangdong and Fujian moved to Southeast Asia. Together with local communities and the British, they established schools and factories. One example from that era is today’s National University of Singapore.
At the same time, these communities preserved many Chinese traditions, such as foot binding for women. The pieces you’re looking at are very typical products of that historical moment, shaped by migration, colonial influence, and enduring cultural heritage.
Ohh, thank you so much ![]()
