🌍 Earth Day Mini Activity: Our Community, Our Planet (Weekend Glow #7)

I think Robotime could try to reduce plastic packaging. Instead of using plastic bags for the different parts, paper bags might work as a more sustainable alternative.

I do my part by reducing waste as much as possible. I always bring a reusable cup or container when I’m at work or getting takeaway. Of course, I also make sure to recycle my waste properly. I don’t litter and if I see rubbish or packaging on the ground, I’ll pick it up and dispose of it in a nearby bin if it’s safe to do so.

We recycle a lot at home. I think Robotime is doing a great job using recycled packaging. However, I’m undecided about replacing the plastic bags. I frequently buy board games from a particular board game company. They release new board game editions and use these compostable plastic bags. Everyone thinks, “Oh great! We can throw them in our compost bin.” But these are industrial compost bags, and most communities don’t have access to them in my area. If we were to replace the plastic bags, I believe paper sacks would be an excellent alternative. After all, they’ll be discarded anyway once the contents are used.

use recycled or FSC-certified wood, non-toxic water-based glue and paint, less plastic packaging, and modular parts for repair instead of replacement.

I try to make eco-friendly choices by reusing materials, reducing waste, saving energy and water, and supporting products with sustainable packaging and safer materials.

I also do my part by choosing reusable items, recycling when I can, and being mindful about what I buy and throw away.

In our household, we repurpose anything we can. We live by Recycle-Reduce-Reuse.

I save all the scraps from my kits and use them to remake parts around the house (shimming door frames, etc.) We also use them for kindling for our campfires. My son likes using them to "invest " different things.

I think that it would be great for Rokr et al. to package the kit pieces in small paper bags.

From an eco-friendly perspective, Robotime is already making positive efforts, such as using FSC-certified wood and offering replacement parts to reduce waste. To go even further, they could minimise plastic use in both components and packaging, and transition to fully recyclable or biodegradable packaging materials.

Additionally, providing more guidance on repairing, reusing, or upcycling finished models could help extend product lifespan and promote a more sustainable, circular approach.

Hmm I don’t know if I’ve gotten the hang of it yet, but I still want to share that my suggestion would be to use biodegradable plastic or organic bags (even paper bags) to replace foil in sets, especially ROKR, but also others. I’m thinking about the Marble Run Parallel Word series, where we have tons of plastic waste, bags, and cut-out parts. I know it’s part of the fun, but the bags themselves could be eliminated. I’d also replace the inserts in the sets that hold them in place during transport with paper inserts, like the ones you can find in Booknooks, for example.

I know you’re already doing a lot of good for the environment, especially since the boxes are made of cardboard; the main component of the models is wood. It’s more about the packaging. What’s more, Nanci comes in a cardboard box and a plastic bag, which is great and a bit of a surprise, but I’m curious if something could be done here, like using recycled plastic or something biodegradable as well.

I believe that you will deal with such issues and help make this world more ecological with your approach <3

Earth Day always makes me think about the little things we do without even noticing :globe_showing_americas:

I love building these miniatures, and I’ve kind of gotten into the habit of not throwing anything away  leftover pieces, extra wood, even tiny decorations — I’ll keep them and reuse them in other builds. It’s actually really fun mixing parts from different kits and creating something new

For Robotime, it would be really nice to see less packaging, or maybe a small idea card inside each kit showing how to reuse leftover parts. I think a lot of us crafters would love that

For me, crafting is already my little quiet escape, so if I can enjoy it and also waste a bit less, that just feels right :yellow_heart:

I love using these kits as a base for creative upcycling. I often integrate found objects or scraps from around the house—old fabric snippets, dried botanicals, or discarded packaging—to customize my sets. It turns the hobby into a lesson on seeing the potential in ‘trash’ and giving it a new life.

Replacing the plastic bags with recyclable styrofoam. We recycling stryofoam, that would make kits a bit more eco friendly. As well as keep the items more secure. :heart_hands::heart_hands: Great question!!:heart:

Hi @Lindsey_Brooks, first of all, welcome to the community!

And secondly, congratulations for your prize :trophy: . It looks so nice. I hope you will enjoy to build it .

Congratulations to all winners!

I like doing things hands-on, especially when it comes to helping the planet in small ways. This past Earth Day, I helped plant trees and spent some time upcycling random little things instead of tossing them out. It was simple, but it felt good to actually do something.

Lately, I’ve also gotten into building miniature, which has been really fun. I’ll use leftover materials, scraps, or things I’d normally throw away and turn them into tiny scenes or objects. It’s kind of relaxing, and I like that nothing goes to waste.

It might seem like a small hobby, but it’s made me more aware of how I use things and how much can actually be reused if you get a bit creative. Also it’s very nice to slow down and build something with your hands!

Congratulations to all winners! :100:
