I completed the calendar I got for Fathers Day from my wife. What at first I thought would be a quick build turned into a definite challenge.
First the pieces are super thick. The panels are made of plywood!! Each piece is very stable and well made. However it was a difficult task separating the pieces from the panels. Having to use my craft knife on each piece to cut the tabs.
Then when trying to color the edges I found out that plywood is thirsty. Like Sahara desert in the middle of summer and no water thirsty
I started out using markers and after this kit had its fill of acrylic marker it decided it needed regular acrylic paint Used up my white marker, my orange and my gold acrylic marker lol.
I love the way it turned out. I think the color scheme stayed culturally accurate as well.
This calendar is supposed to be a perpetual calendar where by the month lines up with the year and you choose the date on the bottom. Caveat: I still haven’t figured out how to work it lol.
The instructions. Oh boy here we go. They are rough. There is no indication of exact placement or when the piece should be reversed or not. This last part caused me the biggest headache. I was at the last step and it wasn’t turning when I realized I had done it wrong.
I had to take it all apart and reassemble it again. That means removing joints, undoing carefully placed glued parts. Thankfully it didn’t take too long relatively, to reassemble.
Oh yeah this kit uses toothpicks. Yes. Toothpicks to secure joints.. That was a new one for me. Anywho… it finally came to completion tonight. And I really dig it. It’s gonna go up on the wall as I figure out how to work it.
Up next!!
A new kit I got from my daughter for Father’s Day as well
You did an amazing job! It turned out so nice. Toothpicks? Don’t get me started. Ugears and Wood Trick are famous for those. I have had my fair share. ZERO fun to be had…LOL!
OK this is when I say Google the Mayan calendar and how to use LOL.
It reminded me of your other build though as soon as I saw it. So you have your ancestral theme going here!
Wow, the calendar turned out absolutely beautiful with those vibrant colors! It sounds like it was a crazy challenge to assemble but you did an amazing job pushing through it
