I just realized it has been 19 days since I shared my custom space shuttle and @Lily had asked for some tips and techniques. So , here I am sharing them now.
If you choose to paint, it is much easier to do so when parts are flat and still in the boards. Edges can be done in sections while assembling. I would choose a color that covers well because you don’t want to be doing edges twice. This is why I cose black for most edges.
Yes, you can paint your gears and moving assembly on the deck. Paint it first, then sand and wax generously. Black is good for this because it already matches the plastic gears given. YES! I sanded and waxed those as well.
I struggled a LOT with the testing. I kept missing a step, so I watched a Youtube video multiple times and finally got it right on my 30th?attempt. I had almost given up thinking I had a faulty lamp wire.
When it comes to testing later, put in part C14. I did not have to do this…but I have seen MANY who think their model is not working because of missing the directions clearly stated on page 22. Also be sure to check that gears are running smoothly moving your pad back and forth 10 times or more, adding more wax if needed.
When installing your tinted windows, glue them in. Mine were falling out constantly while trying to proceed with other steps.
Wiring directions for lights are very precise. Follow them.
If you are having trouble inserting ANY piece, sand and wax in order to avoid breakage
Patience is key when installing ‘rooftops’ , especially part J42 on page 27.
Be sure to support your swinging arm from the backside when installing parts on it.
When building your rocket, make sure that ALL parts of the ‘backbone’ inside are completely flush as shown in pictures. (pages 35-36)If not, you struggle later on.
Last of all, ENJOY the journey, as it is a wonderful one!
Such wonderful and thoughtful tips — thank you so much for taking the time to share them! Your attention to detail really shows how much love and care you put into your builds. It’s always inspiring to read your posts @Nita_Davis
You did a beautiful job on this and your tips are so thorough and helpful!
You always make me want to do some of these. Some of which I wouldnt have thought about until I see your final products! All so inviting.

I also found if you look on the site on the top right is a magnifying glass. You can enter terms and it will bring things up for you. I was trying to figure out the whole perpetual calendar thing, typed that in and brought up the images and things I was looking for!
