Today, my class and I started building the Rowood Red Camellia flower together! To give you an idea, my students are in fifth grade — they’re around 9 to 10 years old.
A few weeks ago, I showed them some of the miniature DIY houses I’ve built, and they absolutely loved them. That’s when the idea came up to create a class project together — something I mentioned in a previous post.
This morning, I brought the two flowers I had planned for the project: the Red Camellia and the Sunflower. They were so excited! We voted as a group, and the Red Camellia won. My original plan was to start another day when we had more time, but seeing their enthusiasm, I let a small group begin assembling it right away.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that they could follow the instructions quite well, step by step. Still, maybe because they’re new to this and a bit afraid of breaking the pieces, I had to go around double-checking and tightening the parts they connected to make sure everything fit properly.
They even came up with the idea of checking off each step in the manual as they went — a very smart way to stay organized! I’ll keep sharing their progress as we find time to continue the build. My plan is to have small groups of students working on the flower on different days so everyone gets to participate.
They’re really into it and find the project super interesting! Many of them have already asked me where I buy my Rowood flowers because they want to make their own at home. They’re also very excited about the workshop I mentioned — it’s still in the works, but I don’t have all the details yet, haha.
What do you think of this project? Do you believe they’ll be able to complete the flower on their own, or will I have to help a lot?
I’m sure they can do it too
I just need to help them a little since it’s their first one. Some of them even told me they’ve started building miniature DIY houses at home after I mentioned that I make them myself. I’m so happy for them hehe
Yes, once I showed them how to do it, they actually managed quite well on their own! They just needed a bit of guidance at first, but they quickly got the hang of it.
Such a great idea to do this together with the children. their enthusiasm is so cute I think building these structures is very good for there insight and fine motor skills.
That would be such a great idea, and it sounds really fun! Unfortunately, we’re a bit short on time right now — we’ve started preparing them for middle school, so they don’t have much free time lately. But I’d absolutely love to try something like that in the future!
Thank you so much @Liset! They’re really enjoying it, and I completely agree — it’s a wonderful way for them to work on focus and fine motor skills while having fun.
Thank you so much! We could only spend a short while on it, and I used part of our weekly hour for group dynamics and teamwork. They really enjoyed it — it was such a fun and creative way to learn together!
