🫶 [Robotime Social Good] The Final Chapter: Little Builders vs. the Orchid

After many days of trying their best with the Purple Moth Orchid, and several of them getting sick and missing sessions along the way, with the incredible help of their classmates (and yes, a lot of superglue), they finally finished their orchids!! And trust me, they took them home sooooooo proud!

They told me they wanted something beautiful but also challenging… and it definitely was.

Personally, I find this kit quite simple, and even if I spend more time painting the edges, I usually go through it pretty fast. So it really surprised me to see how many doubts and difficulties they had.

And honestly? After seeing their experience first-hand, I don’t think this is a great kit for absolute beginners, especially for kids who have never done wooden, ROKR or Rowood models before. The pieces are extremely delicate, especially the petals, which bend and break super easily, and fitting everything together requires more precision than it seems.

See this one? She try to put the flower backwards or head down :see_no_evil_monkey:

Some of them, even following the steps correctly, couldn’t get all the flowers to fit well on the stem. It was as if something had been assembled backwards (not talking about the petals) or with the wrong inner piece. I had to disassemble a few and rebuild them, and even then, with some flowers I couldn’t figure out exactly where the mistake had happened (not easy when I can’t be watching each of them every single second!).

So yes, it’s a kit they liked and found beautiful, but also one that came with unexpected challenges, delicate pieces and moments of frustration.

But despite all that…

they finished, they learned a lot, they helped each other, and they took their orchids home with huge smiles :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

And honestly, that’s the heart of this whole Little Builders project: watching them learn, get frustrated, try again, collaborate, discover solutions, cheer each other on, and finally overcome something that looked too hard at first.

Thank you for following their journey with me! I will do a recap with all the builds and comments when I can

Such a beautiful story @Wenbare I am smiling reading through their experiences.

So true it would be difficult to backtrack mistakes especially when you were not watching. You’re such a big helper for these kids. Good job Wendy in guiding them through their build.

The orchids look beautiful  anyone would be proud. Amazing job kids!

Thank you so much, @Jill_Francisco!!!
They really worked hard on these, and guiding them through all those tricky moments was totally worth it.
Backtracking mistakes was quite the adventure, but they did amazing, they’ll be so happy you liked their orchids! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I think with the flowers, the directions can be a little hard to follow. It is easy to miss a step or to put something on backwards especially when first doing them. I admit I get confused too because you have the one pamphlet, then you have the other that comes with each flower. Then you have choices of how to present. And based on that, if you already built, you may take some apart.
That is me though and maybe others are not as confused! LOL

They did so well and these are beautiful flowers for them to keep as reminders of their experience.

Oh yes, you’re definitely not the only one!
Those two sets of instructions can get confusing so fast, and I’ve seen plenty of backwards petals and mixed steps too. Taking things apart and redoing them became a whole routine for us! :joy::joy:

with each one I learned, which means they most likely did too! I just cant say enough what a great experience for them!

Thank you so much! I’m really glad you found it insightful, their little journey was so special to watch.

Thank you! Yes, they had such a happy time with this one. Even with the tricky parts, they really enjoyed it!

Yeeees! I think the same! They told me they will treasure it a lot heheh

Thank you for the update. I’m glad they were able to finally find success even if it was a painful journey at times.

Have they done any of the miniture kits? I wonder how they would feel about a kit like “Record Mood”. I adored that kit. I got to paint a tiny desk and it was darling.

Yes, I’m glad too. They built all the kits they received and the ones I’ve been showing. Now, if they get any kits as Christmas gifts and build them, I’ll find out in January.

Beautiful final chapter with the happiest ending! And the best part is they will only get better and more experienced from here!

We are so proud of them here! :pink_heart:

Great sound

Aww thank you so much!
I’m incredibly proud of them too, they pushed through so many tricky moments, and seeing them grow with each build has been the sweetest thing.
And you’re right, from here they can only get better!

They really did a great job :star_struck: This sounds like the most difficult construction of all for them. It’s remarkable to read how much patience the children had and how they didn’t break the flowers in their frustration

Thank you! They really did their best. The most that happened was that someone would set their orchid aside for a moment… and then another classmate would encourage them to keep going. It was really sweet to watch them support each other
