Hi everyone! Hope you’ve all been doing well! Sorry I’ve been a little quiet lately. It’s been a super busy week balancing both work and household chores, plus I was tied up with my little project: customizing my treasure tray ![]()
And finally, here it is! I can finally show it to you after almost a month. I’ve finished it at last!
Since I love pink and cherry blossoms are my favorite, I decided to go with a sakura theme. I really wanted to make it personal. This was actually my very first time customizing a build, so I just had to summon up my courage even though I was so nervous! I’m so happy with how much I learned along the way.
Here is the step by process and materials I used:
Base Coat: I started by spraying the entire tray with a white spray paint primer. Once that dried, I sprayed it with pastel pink spray paint. I actually thought it would cover up the laser-engraved details on the back so I was super happy when the pink paint made them pop out even more!
Front Containers: After the pink layer dried, I painted the two square containers in the front with light yellow multi-surface paint.
Sketching & Painting: This part took me a while because I couldn’t jump straight into painting after sketching. I wanted to finish all my other tasks first so my mind could be completely calm and focused purely on painting. After sketching out the pagodas, mountain, sun, and sakura flowers, I bought the acrylic paints and brushes I needed.
As I mentioned in my previous post, I’m not really a traditional painter. I used to paint as a kid, but because of work, I’ve gotten much more used to digital art. Still, I had so much fun. It felt like stepping back into my childhood.
I even learned a trick using a toothpick for the tiny pagoda details, especially the roof as well as the little sakura flower details, hahaha!
I enjoyed every minute despite a lot of trial and error (the pagoda and cherry blossoms were definitely a challenge!). Once the painting dried, I placed acrylic sheets over the painted sections for protection so the paint wouldn’t fade over time.
Detailing: After the front was done, I detailed the rest of the tray. I painted some parts in a darker pink, added outlines, and painted small sakura flowers for extra personal flair. It was a bit tricky since some parts of the wood were untreated, which caused my pens to bleed a bit.
Drawers & Base: I lined the inside of the drawers with floral wallpaper stickers. It’s a different flower pattern since I couldn’t find a sakura design, but I actually love how it turned out! I also placed it on the main section where the wooden sheets go.
Final Seal: Once everything was complete, I coated the entire piece with glossy thermoplastic acrylic spray paint to give it a protective layer so it stands the test of time.
I know it’s not perfect, but I’m proud to say that despite all the challenges, I poured all my love, patience, and joy into customizing my treasure tray. I hope this inspires anyone who is hesitant to try customizing for the first time, don’t be afraid!
Just do what makes you happy, because seeing something you once only visualized come to life is the best feeling ![]()
Also, once again, huge thank you @Robotime for creating such a wonderful tool! It really makes building kits so much easier, smoother, and way more enjoyable ![]()
