While planning my own customized creation, I started thinking about all the little tricks and lessons I’ve learned throughout my miniature building journey. Every kit gives us a beautiful foundation but customization allows us to add our own personality, imagination and stories. Whether you change one tiny detail or completely transform the original design, here are some of my favorite tips to help you make your next miniature uniquely yours! 
You don’t need an entire craft room or expensive materials to begin customizing! Acrylic paint, small brushes, scrapbook paper, craft glue, tweezers, scissors, moss, flowers, beads and charms are all wonderful supplies to keep nearby. Before buying something new, look through the materials you already have. You may discover the perfect tiny addition hiding in your craft collection!
Before you begin building, think about the feeling you want your miniature to have. Do you imagine something soft and floral, magical and mysterious, warm and rustic, sweet and colorful or cozy and natural? Choosing a mood and a simple color palette first can help your customized walls, furniture and decorations feel connected
You don’t have to keep every piece its original color! Acrylic paint, paint markers, metallic accents, pastel details or a colorful front door can completely change the personality of a build. For the smoothest finish, paint pieces before assembling them, apply several thin layers and allow each layer to dry completely. My personal favorite medium is definitely acrylic paint markers! They are super easy to use and I love the vibrant color they give the wood
New walls and floors can make a tiny room feel like an entirely different place. Try using scrapbook paper, printable wallpaper, fabric, wood-pattern paper, miniature tiles or painted flooring. Trace each wall or floor piece before cutting your chosen material and always test the fit before permanently gluing it into place. I love printing wall paper with my printer and tracing out the pieces before applying
The smallest details often make the biggest difference! Moss, miniature flowers, beads, charms, tiny books, artwork, food, seasonal decorations, bows, lace, ribbon and handmade signs can bring a miniature scene to life. These little additions help create the feeling that someone truly lives, works or spends time inside your tiny world
Meaningful details can make a build feel even more special. Add a miniature photo, use your favorite colors, hide a tiny version of your pet in the scene, create a sign with your name or include your favorite snack or drink. You could even add something inspired by a special place or memory. These personal touches are what turn a kit into your story
Before permanently attaching anything, place your furniture and decorations inside the scene without glue. Experiment with different arrangements and take a photo when you find your favorite layout so you can easily recreate it. Check that doors, lights, switches and moving parts still work before securing everything. There is no rush. Planning is part of the creative process!
You can follow the instructions exactly, change a few details or transform the entire design into something completely new. Every approach is creative and no version is better than another. The best miniature is the one that makes you happy and allows you to enjoy the building experience!
For this build, I completely transformed Catherine’s Living Room by Rolife using my favorite purple color palette. I customized the walls, floors, furniture, plants, flowers, artwork and tiny accessories to create a room that feels entirely my own. Every little choice from the purple sofa and floral wallpaper to all the purple flowers and the cozy rug really helped bring my vision to life!
Your miniature doesn’t have to look exactly like the picture on the box. Let yourself experiment, make changes and create something that feels special to you. Most importantly, take your time and enjoy bringing your tiny world to life! Happy cozy building
