I Tried Air-Dry Foam Clay for Miniature Snow, and Now I’m Hooked

I have a bunch of Christmas miniature builds that I’ve been collecting, and this fall I’m finally planning to start working my way through them. And now I know one thing for sure: if a build needs snow, it’s getting air-dry foam clay snow.

I recently finished a snowy book nook that used air-dry foam clay to create the snow on the roofs, trees, rocks, and other surfaces. When I first opened the kit and realized I was going to have to make all that snow myself, I wasn’t sure I was going to like it.

It looked like one of those things that could either turn out really cool or look like I had stuck blobs of white stuff all over my miniature.

I was completely wrong to worry about it.

This stuff is ridiculously easy to work with

There really wasn’t much of a learning curve. I could pull off a little piece, squish it where I wanted it, smoosh it around, build it up, flatten it out, or move it somewhere else.

It doesn’t immediately start drying the second you touch it, either. I had several minutes of working time, which was plenty. There was no feeling that I had to hurry and get it perfect.

And honestly, trying to make it perfect would probably make it look less like snow.

I found that the irregular edges, little lumps and uneven areas were exactly what made it look like snow that had actually blown in and accumulated naturally.

The dimension makes such a difference

Basically, if it looks like snow should pile up there, I’m probably going to put some there.

You don’t need to be able to sculpt. You don’t need to make identical shapes. You don’t even really want everything smooth and even.

You just squish it, smoosh it and let it look like snow.

I’m hoping I start seeing air-dry foam clay included in more winter miniature kits. But whether the kits include it or not, mine are getting snow this year.

I’ve already got my extra foam clay ready. :snowflake:

@Kim_Kieffer it does look natural and beautiful!! What a great 3d way to add to a kit. I’m gonna look for some and remember your words. “Just squish it, and Smoosh it.”

Words to live by my friend

Wow, it really brought some dimension to this build. Everything looks great!

I had no idea it would be this beautiful when I clicked on it! Now I totally understand why you’re obsessed, I’m hooked too! The snow looks unbelievably real. It’s the kind of winter scene I’ve always dreamed of, especially since we rarely get snow here.

It looks gorgeous! Ive used some kind of snow texture stuff in a little jar, cant remember the name. I’ll have to look for what you used, it looks a lot better and more realistic. Very well done!
