Last night I finally finished the Fairyland House. I am so in love with the build I made a little video!
I used to call it the waterfall house because that was the first thing that caught my eye the very first time I saw it. I kept eyeing it and kept going back to it. But I thought wow, this is just going to be so hard to do and I wasn’t ready then. Even when I finally ordered it I was hesitant because it just seemed so different from the regular book nooks and models that I was doing. After doing the beach house and the magic closet and a couple other more fiddly things I felt I was almost ready but still a bit intimidated. But I kept seeing posts of people who have completed it and it looked so pretty and I thought, ok, I am going to do it.
I really loved making all the tiny furniture. I thought they were very well designed. It wasn’t just slapping tiny sticks together, there were layers and it was really like a miniature version of the real thing. The lanterns were hard because threading the thread through all those beads was so difficult. Finally I figured out to use my needle threader to help. I also didn’t do the knot on the bottom because firstly I couldn’t really do it nicely and I thought it made the lanterns a bit lopsided so I just made a tiny ball of glue at the bottom so the beads won’t slide out. And it worked out well.
The waterfall…my, the waterfall. I have read how hard it was so I was mentally prepared, or so I thought! But these were another level. There were these tabs you had to cut and bend and the template was a tiny bit off compared to the plastic piece so the tabs didn’t fit and I couldn’t figure out how to make it fit for awhile. Finally had to cut the tabs smaller and glued and glued and then glued some more. Regular clear glue wasn’t holding. I ended up using my UV resin glue which I had purchased specifically for this project thinking I would add to the river. UV resin worked beautifully on the waterfall, holding everything and I also had to use the resin to hold the piece down on the river as I had already glued the side pieces down and couldn’t slip the plastic underneath.
And then came the wires. Man, there were so many wires!! I was actually feeling quite overwhelmed by them. So I went to bed and yesterday came back to them and realized they weren’t really that bad. Just had to cut them all shorter and then strip and tie them and thankfully they all worked.
The grass was another issue, the turf as my son would call it. It was messy and of course I glued some on the wrong side so had tp rip and reglue. Using the hairspray really helped to get the small flowers on nicely.
My son also helped by showing me how to use the water gel so I could use it on the waterfall and he also added other artistic elements like the cloud and the batting behind the big waterfall. And using a toothpick to spread out the batting really made it look more real.
I think this has now become my favourite build. It has all the elements that I like, the layered building, the warm cozy ambience with the lights, water feature, tiny fiddly things that I needed to make. I am so happy with this build. This is definitely not a model for everyone but if you have the patience and the time, it really pays off at the end.
