[Challenge & Achievement] Classic Carousel: The Base Is Done!

After resting a bit, I got back to the carousel and kept going at full speed.

It made me laugh that the next step was adding a kind of liquid wax to the plastic parts and to the gear right above the motor. I usually use solid wax, so this one surprised me because it’s much more gel-like. The kit comes with a little wooden piece meant to be used as a tool to apply it, but if you have a silicone brush at home, like the one I use for white glue, it actually works really well to spread the wax evenly along the whole path.

Another little trick: to apply the wax to the gear area, I recommend plugging the carousel in, letting it turn a little, and then stopping it so you can add wax bit by bit to the different sections. Trying to turn it by hand is a bad idea. In fact, you really can’t, which is honestly a good thing because it means it stays firm and doesn’t spin on its own. But since the wax needs to go all around the gear, turning it on and off little by little made it much easier for me.

The next step was starting to build the central column of the carousel. There’s a base section, and then the column starts going up, the one that hides the wires and will support the canopy later. Around it go the mirrored pieces that cover it all. As you can see, there are more gears here too, and they connect with the smaller one from before. My recommendation again: add wax there too. There is never enough wax!! hahaha

Once the gears were fitted in place, I closed the whole column with the large and small mirrored pieces and attached it on top of the carousel base. And with that… the whole base was done!!!

It looks amazing already. I admit I made it spin a few times just to enjoy seeing that everything worked properly, and honestly, I do recommend testing it as you go. Later on, the horses will be attached into the little holes, and that’s exactly why it’s important that the plastic part I showed before is well lubricated, because the horses will slide through that section.

The only problem is that if you make it spin too much, it slowly loses some of that lubrication. But well… if my granny ever needs it later, I’ll figure out how to open it again somehow :joy:.

And I’ll leave it here for now. Next step: the carousel horses, which is going to take me a while because I want to paint the edges nicely.

Thank you so much for reading, I hope these little tips are useful, and I wish you all a very happy week! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Thanks for the waxing tips! Your grandmother is going to love this!

I’m currently using a kit with solid wax, and it’s my first time. The problem is, I never know when I’ve used enough wax, and a lot of it drips outside the kit.

You’re very welcome! I really hope the waxing tips help, and yes, I think my granny is going to love it too

That happens to me too sometimes :joy:. I usually keep testing it until I see that it moves smoothly, and that’s when I feel like it has enough wax. I’d rather add a little at a time than overdo it from the start.

It’s looking amazing! Those waxing tips will definitely help me if I ever have to work with that kind of wax. Good luck with the rest of the build!

Loved the waxing tips! I need them lol

I’m sorry Wendy, I laughed at this. Of course, I’m assuming that you meant for the carousel and not for herself but that is not how I first read it ha ha

Thanks for the waxing tips. It’s great kit

Wenbare, the carousel base looks fantastic, and I love that you got back to it after a little rest and kept going at full speed. That next step making you laugh sounds exactly like the kind of charming little surprise these kits love to throw in. You are really bringing this classic carousel to life!

Looking great already!

I have those kind of wax when I did the Starry Camellia Lamp unfortunately I don’t have a silicon tool to use. Those tools will surely be better at spreading the wax. Thanks for the tip Wendy.

You are making great progress on your carousel btw

@Wenbare great tips ! Its going to look fab ! Im glad youve rested to ! :blossom::cherry_blossom::smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Thank you so much! I’m really glad the waxing tips were useful, and yes, this kind of wax was new for me too, so I thought it was worth sharing

Thank you so much, Jill! Yes, I think a silicone tool helps a lot because it spreads the wax more evenly. I think it’s easy to get one online
