WHAT HAD THORNFIELD CREATED?
The mushrooms grew at an incredible speed. What had once been only a few small growths in the soil had now spread across the greenhouse. They grew between the tiles, along the walls, some reached toward the ceiling.
Thornfield stared at them. This was no longer an experiment he could control. The mushrooms were growing towards him and slowly up Thornfield’s legs.
He raised his arms, trying to protect himself.
He finally understood that he was in danger. He had lost control. What had he created?
ONE YEAR LATER!
No one had seen Thornfield for almost a year. He had no close friends nearby and his family had not heard from him. So when the silence began, no one noticed. No one knew how long he had been gone.
Until one of his old research colleagues from Germany Dr Scheffer had reached out. He was going to conferance in USA, and wanted to meet up with Thornfield. He had been trying to contact Thornfield for months, but he never answered the calls.
Eventually, he decided to go look for him. He knew where Thornfield had been conducting his research in the greenhouse.
When he finally arrived, he stopped. He could hardly recognize the place. The greenhouse that had once been clean and carefully maintained was now almost completely abandoned.
Mushrooms had taken over. They covered the walls. They grew between the shelves. And some had become so large that they were growing through the roof. They were dark, dirty and slimy.
As Schaeffer stepped toward the greenhouse, he saw a small piece of paper.
He picked it up and unfolded it carefully. There was only one thing written on it — a russian telephone number. Why would Thornfield have a Russian telephone number?
Dr Scheffer walked to the greenhouse and slowly opened the door and called for Thornfield, but no answer. He stepped inside and then he saw the chair. A white laboratory coat was still hanging on a chair. Thornfield was nowhere to be seen.
On the table, he noticed a notebook. He carefully picked it up and opened it. Most of the pages were filled with research notes.
But on the final page, there was only one sentence:
“The studies failed, what happens when they find out?”
Scheffer stared at the words…Who are “they”
He turned around and then he noticed the floor. There was a large hole in the middle of the greenhouse. The hole was completely black, deep and he couldn’t see the bottom.
He called for Thornfield, but there was no sign of Thornfield..
It was all silence.. and no traces.. and no Thornfield..
SO WHAT HAPPENED TO THORNFIELD?
-
Did the mushrooms hurt him?
-
And who were “they”? Had they already found out that the studies had failed? Did they take him?
-
Did he fall into the hole? Or did he go down there himself?
-
Was he ashamed of what he had created or afraid of his research?
-
Did he run away from everything? To Russia?
Or was there something else going on?
Still a mystery…
THE END.
Soo yeeah, I’m customizing a abandoned greenhouse with big mushrooms. I used the ChatGPT to illustrate the photos, and help me to write the text (my english is not always the best). But the whole story is created by myself and my imagination.
So now I’m working on making the furniture looking old and abondoned. And my head is soo tired after making up this story ![]()
