This month’s meetup was a little different from our sponsored Robotime events. Instead of receiving event kits, attendees brought their own projects to work on and spent the afternoon crafting together. After hosting my first Robotime meetup in May, I enjoyed the experience so much that I didn’t want to wait until August to gather again. That inspired me to try a monthly library meetup where people could bring whatever project they were working on and enjoy crafting together.
We had 6 attendees, including 2 returning participants from our May Robotime meetup and 4 new faces joining us for the first time.
Most attendees brought miniature kits to work on. One participant’s spouse joined us with a knitting project, which was wonderful to see. I love that this meetup format can welcome different types of creative hobbies and still give everyone a chance to craft together.
The projects around the table were a fun mix. Two attendees were working on more traditional miniature kits with lots of assembly, gluing, and detailed handcrafting, while two brand-new participants brought Super Creator kits for their very first miniature builds. One attendee had reached out beforehand looking for suggestions for a hobby he and his wife might enjoy. We talked through a few options, and they decided to give miniatures a try. It was fun watching them get started. While one spent much of the afternoon chatting, asking questions, and getting to know everyone, the other made impressive progress on her project. Seeing both of them enjoy the experience in their own way was one of the highlights of the afternoon.
One of the returning May participants was my husband, who brought back the music box kit he received at our first meetup. It was his very first miniature kit, and although he had been working on it at home, he intentionally saved the final assembly so he could finish it during the June gathering. It was especially rewarding to see a project started at our May event completed during our June meetup and to watch a first-time builder successfully reach the finish line.
To make things easier for everyone, I brought my cutting mats and loaner tool kits so participants could use whatever they needed during the meetup. The relaxed atmosphere gave people plenty of time to share tips, compare projects, and enjoy crafting together.
While this was a smaller gathering than our sponsored meetup, I came away feeling very encouraged. The goal was simply to see whether there was interest in a casual, bring-your-own-project crafting group between sponsored events. Welcoming four new participants and hearing several people talk about returning in July made me feel that the idea has real potential.
One of my goals as an Ambassador is to help build a welcoming local crafting community here in Central Indiana, and this meetup felt like a great step in that direction. Seeing returning participants come back, meeting new crafters, helping first-time builders get started, and even welcoming a knitter to the table made for a very rewarding afternoon.
Several attendees have already mentioned plans to return for our July gathering, which is exciting to see as this local crafting community continues to grow.
