[Heartwarming] A Little Appreciation for My Fellow Miniature People ❤️

I’ve been thinking about something that happened recently, and honestly, I feel like I need to let it out. Not to start an argument or make anyone feel bad—I just think sometimes you need to say something when something has really hurt you.

I know that from the outside, our hobby can be difficult for some people to understand.

We spend hours putting together tiny pieces, making tiny food, decorating tiny rooms, and creating little worlds that, quite honestly, we don’t need. We spend money on kits that some people might consider expensive, unnecessary, or simply wonder why anyone would spend that much on something so small.

And I understand that. Not everyone is going to see the joy in what we do.

Recently, a friend told me about something one of her relatives had said while looking at an expensive miniature piece displayed in a store in Hong Kong.

Apparently, the relative asked her: “Sino ang tanga na bibili niyan?” (translated: “Who would be stupid enough to buy that?”).

My friend immediately told him that this was actually something I do as a hobby. And after that, he didn’t say anything more.

Now, I know some people might read this and think, “Well, if she’s your friend, why would she even tell you?” And honestly, I wondered about that too for a moment.

But I also know my friend. We have the kind of friendship where we sometimes make side comments to each other without overthinking them. That’s just how we talk. :joy: And I’m sure she wasn’t trying to hurt me or make a judgment about my hobby.

In fact, the moment she realized the comment could be connected to someone she knew and cared about, she spoke up. And I appreciate that.

But still… hearing that word hurt me.

Maybe it shouldn’t have affected me as much as it did, but I think it hit a sensitive spot because, deep down, I know that there are people who see this hobby as silly, frivolous, unnecessary—or even foolish. So, hearing it said so bluntly made me feel quite small.

And hearing someone actually use the word “tanga” (stupid) made it feel very personal.

It wasn’t really about the kit or even the money.

It was about something that brings me so much happiness being dismissed as something stupid.

And that’s why I feel the need to write this—not to criticize that person, but simply because I needed to let it out.

And then I thought about this community.

Here, I don’t have to explain why I enjoy spending hours making something tiny.

You understand the excitement of opening a new kit.
You understand why one tiny detail can take an hour.
You understand the satisfaction of finally finishing a build.
You understand why we take approximately 847 photos of something that’s only a few inches tall. :joy:

And most importantly, we encourage each other instead of making each other feel silly for enjoying something.

So, I wanted to say:

THANK YOU!

Thank you to everyone who has encouraged my builds, followed Café Chronicles, laughed at my miniature food experiments, shared your own creations, answered questions, offered suggestions, or simply left a kind comment.

Your encouragement has meant more to me than you probably realize.

Maybe not everyone understands this hobby.

But we do.

And I’m really grateful to have found my little corner of people who understand why making tiny things can make us ridiculously happy.

I suppose I just needed to say that out loud.

Now… I feel a little better.

And yes, I’m still going to keep making unnecessarily tiny things that make me ridiculously happy. :joy::smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I’ve always told my self that hobbies aren’t meant to give anything other than happiness. I used to paint and sketch and it was always seen as redundant, then I used to do origami and many people see that as paper waste. If we think about it all hobbies, physical or craft, is like that. Only those who enjoy it know how much it means to them. I make miniatures now and that doesn’t stop me when people don’t understand it. Because we don’t have to take into account what others feel.

@Gidge I have heard that a lot from family actually. I’m old enough to not care what people think about my life and what I spend money on. it brings me happiness. Like you said that’s all that really matters!!

Hugs! I feel you @Gidge and what you’re feeling is completely valid. Other people may not understand our happiness, but I’m glad that you have found this community where you can freely share your creativity and passion. Know that every time you share your creations here, you inspire a fellow crafter somewhere.

So let’s keep building those tiny things. It doesn’t matter what others think or whether they understand why we love it. If it makes you happy, brings you peace, and gives you something to look forward to, then keep building.

Because sometimes, the little things we create bring the biggest joy.

As long as this hobby makes us happy, we can keep ignoring their comments. Your money, your rules

Try not to let it bother you. Everyone does things that a small percentage of the population may call stupid, including this person. Don’t take it to heart, he clearly has no understanding of art or an appreciation of others.

Aww. Hugs, Gidge.

Not everyone will understand our hobby, but they don’t have to. What matters is that it brings us joy!

Keep building and keep making those tiny things that make you ridiculously happy. We get it! :orange_heart:

I completely understand why that hurt. And I think you expressed it really well without attacking anyone. I’m so glad you have this community around you, where you don’t have to explain why something so small can mean so much to you. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I completely understand why that word would hurt, especially when this hobby brings you so much happiness. Not everyone has to understand why we love spending hours creating tiny worlds, but I’m so glad you have a community where you don’t have to explain yourself or justify what makes you happy. Keep making those unnecessarily tiny things and taking your 847 photos! :joy::heart: If it brings you joy, that’s more than enough reason to keep doing it.

Ya know what Gidge? I am too. I am going to continue to build as it brings me joy. and if I gift, then I hope it brings that person joy too! I love hearing what you are working on and seeing your progress.

I also have a friend who would have told me what was said. and yes it would hurt a bit but as in anything in life, not everyone can appreciate. We here all can!

This hobby is really not for all. Some people don’t have the time, some doesn’t have the resources, and some indulge in other form of hobby. This hobby is personal for me. As a crafter since I don’t recall when, I have engaged and tried other crafts but this is what i call “home”. I exactly know that this is “the one” for me and I see my future still building kits and my collection growing :joy:. I am so glad to connect to people who share the same passion and hobby. Glad to have met you and everybody here virtually!

I stopped being active but I just had to leave a comment. I hope you feel a little better now, knowing you have a whole rally of support behind you. :pink_heart:

I can imagine how hurtful it must be. I find that some people can be so quick to judge something they don’t understand, because commenting is always easier than thinking.

A hobby is still a hobby, no matter what type it is. As long as we’re not causing harm or neglecting the important things in life, we should just do what we want to spark joy. Life is already hard enough as it is. Honestly, there are far more expensive hobbies out there! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

So keep building, creating and sharing your joy with everyone else. Because as much as this community is healing for you, I’m sure your presence has the same effect on many others too.

I’m so sorry that you were made to feel like your hobby doesn’t matter. I know. Of course there are probably better places that we can be spending our money on but that is why it’s called a hobby. You do it because it brings you joy. I know we can all say, don’t listen to what other people say but we are human and words can hurt us. I think the important thing is to acknowledge that there will be people who don’t get it but at the same time, there are also many many people who get you so let’s focus on the good. I’m obviously talking to myself too! Hope you are feeling better after letting it out.

Everyone spends their money however they please; it’s better to build scale models than to spend money on alcohol, drugs, or bad habits.
It’s a healthy hobby that harms no one, and you get to meet people, too.
Sometimes, the people who make those comments are actually worse off themselves and have more expensive tastes or hobbies.
