The bittersweet experience of Unintentional Customizations

Well! While I wait for my Cuckoo Clock delivery so I can finally start with it (so excited! ), I’m coming here to tell you people… Don’t be sad, mad or angry if something in your kit breaks, or goes somewhere else, or it’s crooked and an uncrookable way, or whatever.

I know the feeling. I know the frustration. Hell, something without a proper solution has happened to me to me in almost every kit I’ve built so far! But you know what? You have some options:

a) Ask for a replacement/buy a new box of the same kit, and wait, wait, waaait

b) Go with it and let the frustration handle it, like, whatever, I’m not gonna bother now

c) Throw it away and give up

d) Try to hide it or fix it the best way you can, even if there’s no possible way, because impossible is not an option for you (even if you have to take a detour and undo half of the build you’ve put together so far)

Opcion “a”, I’m a bit impatient myself. Option “b”, I don’t like it. Option “c”, nooo waaay, I’m not that kind of person. Option “d” sounds like the most appropiated, right? RIGHT?

Well, sometimes option “d” doesn’t do the trick. And that’s the moment I come up with… Option e! Which basically means go with it, keep the building coming, and come up with a fun (or sad) story of how your customization came to happen. Let me walk you through my live and real examples!

So my Dream Gift Factory has a missing toy in the production line. Well, it’s not missing! It’s hiding under the Christmas Tree. That poor horse (well, he has a name, don’t be rude: Horsy) didn’t wanna become a gift box; instead, he wanted to be a gift himself without any kind of wrapping. And now he’s enjoying a happy life circling all the way around the Christmas Tree. Even when it’s not Christmas!

Oh, but this experience of customized kits is coming since my very first, our very own and majestic Seahorse Barque.

I could tell you that I was frustrated, that while putting together the parts covering the stern and the back of the Captain Quarters, I completely missed the translucent paper (the windows) so it’s all uncovered from behind, and also the barrier behind the window broke. Oops!

OR! I could just tell you instead how this ship was secretly captained by the one and only Davy Jones when he needed a break from his duties aboard the Flyng Dutchman, but he wanted to feel the waves and the sea, so he broke the windows the first day he entered those quarters. And half of the barrier went to the sea as well to never be found again.

What else? Oh, yeah! The Sailing Ship, of course. Which story would you prefer? That my big fingers broke all the little parts for the cannons on deck, or that the retired marine sailing this ship decided to make it a peaceful weapon-free boat?

(Oh, yeah, it doesn’t have any ropes either. It’s not that I’ve lost the little bag with them, it’s just that he was retired and old, so he was lazy about it so he let the sails loose)

And well, you all remember the Titanic. Mine has the red parts of the hull a bit crooked to both sides from the center, just under the Showcase Room:

My mistake, you say? Or maybe it’s just that my Titanic had more reflexes than yours and that little crooked look is all it got from the Iceberg Incident?

Ah, speaking of vehicles, we also have the magical Santa on a Sleigh:

You could think his right arm (the one holding the rope to the reindeer) is crooked due to a mistake I’ve made while putting the body parts together…

Or I could tell you about an accident he had in a specially narrow chimney that sadly hurt his shoulder that way. Poor Santa! Don’t blame him.

Oh, @Wenbare @JDisaduck, I know I owe you some funny eyes to my Santa. Well, I’ll do it as soon as you give me and advice on how to stick them, I’ve tried during half an hour with both glue and tape and everything I’ve gotten so far is a creepy mess of black and white really tiny eyes of paper

ANYWAY!

All I wanted to tell you people through this weird kind of a showcase is… Don’t get frustrated. I know it’s easy to say, and during your building process you’re gonna break parts, parts are gonna go missing, parts are gonna get crooked, parts are gonna go in the wrong places not to be notice until it’s too late…

But live goes on, and so do our builds. You can let the frustration take the best of you, or you can take it easy, be nice about it, and think about your next customized and unique kit. After all, it’s a whole build you’ve achieved! You’re gonna let a small mistake tarnish the amazing picture? Didn’t think so :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s all in the mindset, folks!

And you guys? What Unintentional Customizations have you made/found in your buils and how did you deal with them?

See you/read you around

wow your horsy, davy jones, captain sailing ship and mr atlantic the ship itself sure have their own mind trolling you and your big fingers around :sob:
applaud for your patience in handling their “mischiefs”

There are always workarounds or bits of tape holding the back together ha ha
Great read Eloy.

Thanks haha

They are, aren’t they? That stern back cover of the Captain Quarters were a bit of a nightmare to work with

@TheToday .

Poor you… I know how hard it is when something went wrong because of a damaged pieces.

Concerning the little poney under the Christmas tree, no luck. It had almost happened to me also but I have been able to save my piece.

Lots of my craftings have few defaults that happily can’t be seen.

In January, I had almost finished my little Alice but linking the dress and the petticoat both in plastic was a nightmare. I had almost broken her legs!

Then I have stopped forcing the two parts of her dress. But Alice’s waist wasn’t well inserted. What did I do? Gluing of course, as usual, to fix this imperfection! I have fixed a little piece of sticky paper on her waist. It is not visible from afar, but if you look more attentively her waist, you’ll see I have indeed cheated. Even if none of my family or friends has noticed this, I am disappointed because I know this wasn’t well done.

I have plenty of models with imperfections (I’ll show you some later!). The last one was the light in my sunshine town badly bended. I had almost short-circuited the light bulb and I have finally prefered to leave it as it (previously published in another topic).

But, don’t despair! I’m sure this has happened to most crafters of the community’s (well I hope so). I’m still building models and each time… fingers crossed! Let’s wait and see if I can do it very well or not.

Good luck!

You just made my day with this post…and it’s not even 7am…LOL! I love the term “unintentional customizations” and I think that horsy is probably living his best life (kind of like being a carousel horse) only in a somewhat awkward position. That’s okay. Life goes on. I have a beautiful Gramaphone that will never play music because VERY early on, I put on the wrong sized elastic band. It can’t be undone…but I’m okay with that. My horses on the romantic carousel were dragged out of there holes when an outer support pole came out during a final test run. It never worked properly after that and there was no way I was going to take it apart after all of my painting. I have 2 other medels with rubber band motors that don’t run. Oh well, I know I put my heart and soul into them anyways.

Everything can happen! Thanks a lot for sharing your own issues here
well, who knows. Maybe Alice doesn’t have any problems with her dress or waist? It’s just… How should I call it? The twisted effect of her falling into the rabbit hole :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

Just giving you crazy mindset ideas, though. I know your pain! And I’ve heard about the cursed waist of Alice many times in this community, sadly. The kit is looking good overall though, you should be proud!

And while I understand your disappointment, let me share with you something my grandpa once told me. What’s the problem? One detail is broken, or gone, or imperfect? So what? The whole thing and the rest of the build are amazing.

Imagine you have a great garden of roses (or whichever flowers of your choosing). Would you dislike the garden because one petal of one rose went rotten? I don’t think so. You’ve earned and built your garden. Enjoy it! Let the beauty of the whole spread to the rotten petal. It’s just a petal in a garden, you know.
