Selling completed builds

Today I attended a rummage sale. I had a huge amount of items after spring cleaning my home and craft room. Just for something different, I thought that I would try my luck at selling some completed builds. I had so many people stop and admire my builds, tell me stories about someone that they know who just loves miniatures, or just to make conversation about a particular build, but nobody wanted to pay what I was asking.

I have heard of people who sell their builds for twice the price that they paid for the kit. Today, I was selling my builds for less than the kit price and people told me I was asking too much. I sold one build only when I dropped the price.

It was certainly eye opening for me, and I will try again at a market in the future, but wonder if this is the norm? What do you think?

Unfortunately I think it is. It’s hard to sell completed kits from what I understand. I’ve never done it. But have seen a lot of people say the same

Oh so sorry to hear that! I have not thought of selling mine. When I am doing the cross stitch before and the diamond paintings, most of them I gave to family and friends. I just like the idea of keeping my hands busy but really nowhere to place those finished crafts at home. When I am into creating paper crafts before, i created a group where we send out handmade cards to senior/nursing homes and children hospitals. Same with beanies when I also tried doing knitting. Lol. It would be a nice way to sell them though. I would probably do a benefit auction and send the proceeds to foundation for cancer treatment for kids.

Everybody loves them but nobody wants to pay for them.

You’re a beautiful person for doing this Vangie. I was trying to make a little more room at home.

Originally, I wasn’t going to bother taking any but had some extra room in the car when I packed it.

That happened to me. I lowered the price, but they still complained it was too high and tried to find fault with it. Yet, I stuck to the price I wanted.

That’s too bad. They probably do not understand the labor of love we put on our creations. Maybe it would depend on the venue and customers. I still believe you can sell them at a good price

Good for you Nicole. They tended to back down a little when I told them the RRP of the kit in the stores right now.

I guess that I will keep trying. We are coming up to Christmas, so I will see if I can get a couple of Christmas builds to sell.

Maybe it will work in other selling venue. I think most people attending rummage sales has a mindset of seeing items that are way below the market price. Like almost giving them away. Try joining a different marketplace like what we call here a craft fair. The people who go there are more likely into buying finished crafts

I suppose people want things handed to them on a silver platter…

I think so as well. It amazes me.

I don’t know anyone who sells them, but I hear people claim they sell them for what it cost them to buy. I have never seen it happen however.

@Suzanne_Jones thats such a shame hun … I see a lot on vinted that people are selling … a lot of work goes into these kits and there definitely worth the selling price …

Maybe they’d sell better as a fundraiser! :joy: I’ve never thought of selling my finished builds because I honestly didn’t think anyone would buy them. I just do it for fun—but I’m running out of space! A friend suggested I open a “museum” for them. I said, “Sure… are you giving me the space?” :joy:

I tried this only one time. I put my Custom SeaHorse Barque up on Marketplace asking for 70 because I knew people would low-ball the asking price. One guy sent me a message asking if I would take 30. I told him NO. I have an unbuilt one here that you can have for 35 and you can build it yourself.

I think unless people are actually crafters themselves unfortunately they have no idea how much work goes into these things, as well as the cost for materials, etc

Ive never tried to sell a build or that sort of thing but I know more from experience about crochet, etc that a lot of people would expect you to be able to crochet them a custom blanket for £20-£30 maybe - £20-£30 wouldn’t even cover the cost of the amount of wool needed (even if that wool was bought from your local bargain store) - then if I actually did crochet as my job, technically I would need to pay myself an hourly wage as well - so add that on top and even the fastest crocheter (I’m definitely not fast) would take at least 8 hours or something for a baby blanket

I think if you were maybe selling your completed builds at some sort of craft fair where they would get the attention of other crafters who would appreciate the amount of work and time that goes into them then you could sell them for the amount of money you deserve to get for them

Unfortunately these days a lot of other people just don’t understand

I did not include the expletives that were in my head when typing that response. @Nic_Ozz

I’m sorry to hear about your experience @Suzanne_Jones but I do have a feeling that built kits sell less than its worth.

My husband also wants me to sell my finished builds because our house is also starting to get cramped. But I don’t think our country has the market for it.
