ROKR Magic Piano – motorized / looping mod?

Hi everyone :waving_hand:

I recently built the ROKR Magic Piano (AMK81) and absolutely love the design and mechanism. I’m curious if anyone here has experimented with a safe or reversible way to let it play continuously in a loop, instead of manually winding it each time.

I’m not trying to change the melody or redesign the internals, and I’d like to avoid damaging the wooden gears or music comb. Ideally, something like:
A low-RPM motor assist
Or an external method that turns the handle automatically

Before attempting anything myself, I wanted to ask:
Has anyone successfully tried this?
Any lessons learned or things to avoid?

Would motorizing the handle externally be safer than driving the gears directly?
My skill level is hobbyist / DIY (basic electronics, nothing advanced).
Appreciate any experience or advice — even if the answer is “not recommended” :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks in advance!

I’m also thinking of something similar when preparing to make a Ferris wheel model.

Oh this is such a cool idea! I would love to have this when displaying my future models.

I have no clue but maybe @CustomerService can provide an insight?

That is a cool idea. May be @Robotime can introduce the amendment down the track where you can just plug in USB-C cable.

This is a great idea! I’ve made the Magic Piano twice, but I’ve never changed the motor, so unfortunately I can’t help you.

Hello there,This requires modifying the design of the wooden part, and there is currently no relevant modification tutorial available.
