Just wondering what reasons people have for NOT painting their models? Do you prefer the raw wood look that is available for most models? Do you feel incapable of doing so? Is there a time limit that does not allow you time to do so? I understand that everyone has different time restraints and some details are harder than others…but in reality…if you paint MOST projects before building…it really is not that hard. I do 90% of my painting very messy while pieces are still attached in the boards. Please feel free to ask any questions about paints to use, doing details, etc.
I will definitely paint any raw timber models i end uo with, but i think to start with, before i had built any puzzle style i thought painting it seemed way too hard. I didnt understand how you woould know what pieces to paint what colour and i how the colours would all look good together when painting before assembling. Now i have built a few i can see how I could plan it and it doesnt seem so overwhelming.
Im interested to hear other experiences!
Having this community certainly makes me feel more comfortable to try new and different things because i know i have back up here if anything goes wrong! ![]()
If I were to build it, I would be afraid to paint them because I have no experience in painting. But I do agree that having them with colors gives them more character.
What type of paint do you use on these boards?
I appreciate your input. I am no Picasso either. I use the cheapest of paints. Apple Barrel acrylics from Walmart. The sheen of the paint matters. You should never brush gloss paint made for model cars on wood. Flat paints are the most forgiving and it still brings color to the wood @Microgirl Yes, the painting takes much more time..but what is the rush?
It’s fun to read everyone’s opinions. If you don’t like painting, you definitely shouldn’t do it. This hobby is meant to be enjoyable, and if you have to do something that doesn’t work, or you simply don’t enjoy it, you definitely shouldn’t do it. Personally, I do enjoy painting the structures; it allows me to highlight the details and make each piece unique.
My most favorite till now is the magic piano i made in Vincent van Gogh’s starry night
I use acrylic paint. In my experience, the cheapest acrylic paints are often watery and therefore don’t cover well.
I first bought a cheap kit from another brand to test whether painting went well before I started painting with the nice Robotime kits.
I have never done it so it a mix of fear of messing it up and for me it is also more about the building process. I woud dare to start with a small project like the model car with the guitar on the roof. Mechanical models i wouldn’t dare paint as i don’t want to mess up the mechanics. Getting it to run smooth is important for me.
I can certainly understand. The paint has never interfered with the mechanics before so I am crossing my fingers and knocking on wood for this one… @Jerry_Boswijk
I use Apple Barrel acrylics from Walmart @Jill_Francisco
Lets hope this one is the same. The rails and cogs are really tight so hope you get it running
So far everything is running smoothly. My heart will just drop if I experience what you did… So glad it was an easy fix for you @Jerry_Boswijk
Please post pictures of how your build goes. Curious to see how your getting on
I will update later today. Just got my lights and motor hooked up. @Jerry_Boswijk
I know quite a few members from the ROKR official fans group who feel the exact same way. @Microgirl
I’ve never painted any of my ROKR kits but am willing to give it a try eventually.
When you do, please share your progress and feel free to reach out for any help @miniaturist If you have the patience for those tiny kits you do, then you definitely have the patience for painting.
I love that piece and really admire you for it. ![]()
I don’t mind painting at all and in fact enjoys it. But I need to find the right paint or even with permanent marker or something that dries quickly. Have anyone done it with a permanent marker before?
I keep a black permanent marker nearby constantly. With some markers though, the colors will bleed on the raw wood. Always test them on a blank piece of board before using @Tricia12 I use Apple Barrel acrylics from a bottle for 98% of my models
Thank you so much ![]()
