So heres a daily History lesson!
The first “fluted” pillar boxes in Britain were cast at the Eagle Foundry in Broad Street, Birmingham, in 1856. When first introduced on the mainland in the 1850s, these boxes were actually painted a dark “bronze green” to blend in, but this made them difficult to find.
Following public complaints, all post boxes were standardized to the iconic “Royal Mail Red” starting in 1874, a process that took ten years to complete across the UK.
Many of the Victorian wall boxes (1857-1874) in Birmingham and the wider area were produced by the Birmingham firm Smith & Hawkes. Many of the Victorian wall boxes (1857-1874) in Birmingham and the wider area were produced by the Birmingham firm Smith & Hawkes. +6
Red post boxes (pillar boxes) have been a staple of Birmingham streets for over 165 years, with the city playing a key role in their early manufacture and introduction
