Electric globe: Not manual, but I made it be so anyway!

Well in the end I bought it, even though I didn’t have the answer to the question:

Will it work manually AND electrically (like the gramophone for exemple)?
I figured I’d answer it myself XD

As usual, ground setup!

Progress was very fast, and there is something soooo satisfying seeing the sphere part take shape:

Also making it spin. So so so satisfying, weeeeee

Ahem, assembling the… things. I don’t really know if they have a name, the arches?
The meridian lines?

Anyway, assembling those!

Nearly there, just need the finishing touches on the base

And we’re done!!! And there it is spinning as well!

Now to the question: can it spin manually:

No. It’s not like the gramophone, the motor is connected with gears all the way to the globe itself, and the motor lock when not on and spinning. So it’s not made for manual spinning.
BUT! I never let ‘isn’t made for’ stop me before! And the solution for that one was incredibly simple!

This gear right there:

Is supposed to use a medium sized rod as an axis. I switched it for the longest sized rod of the kit (there’s more of it than necessary, love having backup pieces :sparkling_heart: ) which now allow me to push or pull the gear out or into the “system”.
If the gear is in, the motor can spin the globe when turned on. If the gear is out, I can manually spin the globe by hand, freely.

Ta-da! :face_savoring_food:

Wow! Good problem solving there. I can honestly say I do not think I would have been able to come up with the solution. Excellent work!

I’m not a fan of this kit, but I love how it looks when lit up!

That is such a clever solution! I love that you didn’t stop at the fact that it wasn’t designed for manual spinning and figured out a way to make it work both ways. The finished globe looks fantastic, and I can imagine how satisfying it must be to watch it spin!

This is looking great and what a creative way to get around the motor locking it in place.

Great creativity! I had no idea the globe was so small, I always thought it was huge haha.

Very cool! I never thought of powering a build manually instead of with a motor.

That is such a clever workaround for you to do that. The build is gorgeous.
