👍 [Beginner Tips] Beginner and Pro Tip: Wax Study on wooden 3D puzzle components

Here is the link to the personal Wax Study report recently conducted.

(The slide detail is timed at seven seconds each, to allow a reader to have a first glance. Then they can re-play and stop the video to read further at their own pace.)

The Study compares plain stick wax against a specifically chosen “other” material to compare the performance of both products in a specifically designed rig bench test.

As always, there is no one set way to build these 3D wooden puzzles, and, some builders might not agree with the Study findings nor its summation. That is totally OK. Only YOU can decide what to use on your puzzle builds.

Cheers to every builder out there. Enjoy your builds !

Thanks so much for sharing this study, it’s always great to see builders experimenting and testing things so thoughtfully. The reminder that there’s no single “right way” to build is especially appreciated. In the end, everyone finds what works best for their own style, and that’s part of the fun of this hobby.

Just a quick note as well: it looks like the video in the link isn’t playable at the moment, so some people might not be able to view the full test. You may want to double-check the link or reupload it if possible.

Cheers, and happy building to you too! :hammer_and_wrench::sparkles:

Thank for share. This is actually a very interesting and useful tip.

Thanks for sharing…I especially wanted to see the results about Vaseline as so many seem to use it and recommend it. I tried once and hated it. I know some who won’t be happy with these findings.

Thankyou for this!

Interesting and good to know indeed. Thanks a lot for the video

Thank you for sharing this video

Thank for sharing, I love evidence based studies. I took a screenshot of the summary slide, it will be helpful for when I build my first ROKR set. :pink_heart:

I tried vaseline and did not care for it. I have been using the wax and the wood lubricant so will be good to see how that fared!

This one does appear to be a decent alternative choice. Dont use too much. What the study data shows is even the smallest amount of lube yields decent results. No need to lather it all over the components.

I never even knew there was such thing as wood lubricant.

I have used the wax that was included in some of my ROKR builds. I like that wax of seals and protects the wood. I would be worried about swelling if I ever used any kind of oil.

That is why I don’t think using a small brush is best application tool. The brush will have a tendency to spread too much material on a component.

Ohh and in doing the factory, I kind of slathered it on! It is working well so far but I dont know

Thanks for the explanation

This is so thoughtful and generous of you to share! I love how you actually tested and compared materials instead of just guessing. It’s so helpful for both beginners and more experienced builders to see real results. Thank you for taking the time to put this together and support the community!

Thank you so much for sharing. This is quite interesting.

Thanks for this research. There are often a lot of questions about which wax is best to use, and I think your research will answer that. I just use the wax stick that comes with the kit, and so far it’s working fine.
