A Quiet Sakura Bonsai Afternoon

Today my husband wasn’t feeling very well, and after spending the whole morning working on my students’ second-term evaluations, I really needed a way to disconnect my brain for a while.

So I sat with him in the dining room to keep him company, put on some calm music, and started building a kit next to him. I hadn’t really planned it, but for a few days I had been feeling like building the Sakura Bonsai.

A little while ago I helped some of my students build theirs, but I hadn’t built my own yet, even though I bought it a few months ago.

The Cherry Blossom collection is my favorite from Rolife. I absolutely love the sakura flower theme, and this was actually the last kit from the collection that I had left to build (except for two book nooks that I still don’t have :smiling_face_with_tear:).

I already talked a bit about this kit when I shared my students’ experiences, but this time I ran into a few different little issues myself.

First of all… I can tell I’m distracted lately because I made some silly mistakes. Thankfully I managed to fix them all, but one of the branches now has more superglue than wood . I also had to sand a couple of holes because some branches didn’t fit properly.

And something I learned from watching the kids build their bonsais: if something can be glued, I glue it.

The loose flowers, the green pieces together, the green pieces to the brown branches… nothing is left loose anymore. I noticed that if the green piece of a flower is just a little thinner, it can fall off easily, so I decided to secure everything.

A little appreciation for my beloved helpers:

In the end it was a very calm and beautiful build, and honestly it was exactly what I needed today: something relaxing to clear my mind and, most importantly, to sit next to my husband and keep him company for a while.

And finally… I have to admit that I’m already starting to feel the meetup nerves!

Next Sunday morning I’ll be organizing the second Barcelona (Spain) meetup, and even though the first one went wonderfully, that doesn’t stop the butterflies from showing up :see_no_evil_monkey:. I’m finishing the last little details and that always makes me a bit nervous.

Anyway, I hope you’re all having a lovely weekend and that the coming week treats you well! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I feel those pre-meetup butterflies with you! :butterfly: Sunday is going to be amazing! If you can handle a classroom of students building bonsais, a group of adults will be a piece of cake! :joy: I love the “if it can be glued, I glue it” philosophy. It’s the only way to ensure a stray sneeze doesn’t cause a petal-pocalypse. Sending healthy vibes to your husband and calm vibes to you for Barcelona! :clinking_glasses::cherry_blossom:

The kit is so beautiful. But the cat isn’t happy.

Haha yes, that’s Alvin! He always looks a bit grumpy in photos, but he actually is so sweet and just wanted to inspect the bonsai very closely. Quality control, you know. :joy:

Thank you so much, Tina! He’s feeling a little better today, thankfully. Now that you say that about the kit in the poster… me neither . And thank you for the encouragement, I’m trying to focus on the excitement more than the nerves! hehehe

Thank you, Jill! I completely agree, it’s a small build but it looks so elegant once finished. The whole Sakura series is just beautiful. And thank you for the good wishes for the meetup! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Haha yes, the super glue struggles are very real! :joy: Sometimes it’s the only way to convince those tiny pieces to behave. Thank you for the encouragement, I’m hoping the meetup will go just as well as the first one! :see_no_evil_monkey:

Thank you! The Sakura Bonsai is such a lovely little build. And Alvin clearly decided it needed his approval too. Hopefully the meetup will go just as nicely! :face_holding_back_tears:

Thank you, Tricia! Yes, the bonsai is really pretty!

Every time you make a build, things can turn out differently, with different problems each time. Luckily, superglue is your best friend  It looks like you had great help from 2 sweethearts :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:. Good luck with the final preparations, I’m sure this meetup will be amazing again.
